CITYWATER and the Baltic Sea Challenge met with coastal municipalities in Latvia, Pāvilosta on 24-25 October. On the agenda of the annual meeting was a seminar, joint lunch and an excursion in Pāvilosta where the participants could see e.g. the effects of coastal erosion.
During the meeting Sintija Dzelme had a presentation about the Baltic Sea Challenge, and Tina Nyfors briefly presented the CITYWATER project.
Representatives from about 11 municipalities or cities participated in the meeting, as well as representatives from the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development of Latvia. Present were also representatives of the association Baltijas krasti (the Baltic coasts) and of the University of Latvia.
On the meeting agenda issues such as development of the coastal infrastructure, political and economic aspects of coastal erosion, the development of the city of Pāvilosta as well as an excursion in Pāvilosta. The head of Pavilosta municipality, Mr. Uldis Kristapsons showd the effects of coastal erosion (picture up to the left).
CITYWATER was also represented by Päivi Tirkkonen from Tallinn University, she was in Pāvilosta to make preparations for the upcoming survey about environmental communication that will be conducted in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
The meeting in Pāvilosta was organized by the Latvian Association of the Local and Regional Governments (LALRG). The aim of the meeting was to bring together the Latvia costal municipalities as well as other organization authorities.
The next meeting for coastal municipalities will be held in the spring 2014 in Dundaga.
